Choosing an Alerting Tool for Your IT Department: What to Look For
There are many alerting and on-call tools. Most do the basics. These are the questions that separate them.
Will it be easy to set up?
If it takes a consultant, it will not get used. Look for a tool where you can connect a monitoring system and get a first alert through in minutes.
What does it cost at your size?
Watch for per-user, per-alert or per-integration fees. A price that looks small for three people can grow quickly. Flat pricing is easier to budget.
Does it work with what you already run?
Check for your monitoring, RMM and chat tools, or a generic webhook that accepts anything.
How does it handle escalation?
Ask what happens if the first person does not answer. Good tools escalate automatically and record who acknowledged.
Can you see what is noisy?
Reports that show your loudest alerts help you fix the cause, not just live with it.
Can it report to leadership?
A monthly summary you can hand to a manager or a client saves you an hour every month.
